The new regime has gained international recognition, culminating in a meeting between al-Shara and U.S. President Donald Trump in Riyadh.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">To assess the new regime\u2019s orientation toward Israel, researchers at JPPI\u2019s Glazer Center conducted an in-depth analysis of hundreds of opinion columns and commentary pieces in Syria\u2019s key state-run newspapers \u2013 <strong><em>Al-Hurriya<\/em><\/strong> (formerly *<em>Tishreen<\/em>*) and <strong><em>Al-Thawra<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 both of which were formerly affiliated with the Assad regime and now serve as official platforms of the new government.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The researchers used advanced AI-based tools to evaluate the tone and sentiment toward Israel in these publications. In addition, they measured the overall volume of Israel-related coverage before and after the regime change, using publications by the official Syrian state news agency, <strong>SANA<\/strong>, which continues to operate under the new government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05d0.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23882\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23882\" src=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05d0.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"736\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05d0.png 611w, https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05d0-286x300.png 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The comparison focused on the periods between January and May of this year (under al-Shara) and the same months last year (under al-Assad).<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>Key finding: Under al-Shara, Israel-related coverage dropped significantly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Whereas under al-Assad, Israel was featured in <strong>up to 43% of SANA reports<\/strong>, this figure fell to just <strong>7%<\/strong> under al-Shara.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The researchers also analyzed the tone of coverage by comparing opinion pieces across the two periods. Using AI classification, they examined articles in *<em>Al-Thawra<\/em>*. In Assad\u2019s last year in power, <strong>nearly 25%<\/strong> of opinion articles (147 out of 595) dealt with Israel, with over <strong>95% rated as \u201chighly negative,\u201d<\/strong> another <strong>4%<\/strong> as \u201cnegative,\u201d and only <strong>0.7%<\/strong> as \u201csomewhat negative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05e8.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-23881\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23881\" src=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05e8.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05e8.png 657w, https:\/\/jppi.org.il\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/\u05e8-300x290.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">By contrast, under al-Shara, <strong>only 5%<\/strong> of opinion columns dealt with Israel. For comparison, a recent JPPI analysis of Egyptian media found that <strong>30%<\/strong> of opinion articles focused on Israe \u2013<strong>six times more than in Syria under al-Shara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Beyond the change in volume, there appears to have been a modest shift in tone. In the Julani-era *<em>Al-Thawra<\/em>*, <strong>65%<\/strong> of articles were classified as \u201chighly negative,\u201d <strong>12%<\/strong> as \u201cnegative,\u201d and <strong>6%<\/strong> as \u201csomewhat negative,\u201d while <strong>18%<\/strong> were labeled \u201cneutral\u201d \u2013 a non-existent characterization in the previous year under al-Assad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Researchers also assessed sentiment in *<em>Al-Hurriya<\/em>* (formerly *<em>Tishreen<\/em>*), another key government outlet. Like *<em>Al-Thawra<\/em>*, the tone toward Israel was overwhelmingly negative: <strong>78%<\/strong> of articles were \u201chighly negative,\u201d <strong>11%<\/strong> \u201cnegative,\u201d and <strong>11%<\/strong> \u201csomewhat negative.\u201d These articles were all written and published after the regime change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Despite the significant drop in the volume of coverage, the tone remains deeply hostile. In \u201chighly negative\u201d articles, Israel is portrayed as a colonial and aggressive entity aiming to take over Syria, sow chaos, and expand at the expense of regional nations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">The research was conducted by JPPI\u2019s Diane and Guilford Glazer Information and Consulting Center researchers Shlomi Bereznik and Eli Kannai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><strong>Yaakov Katz, Director of JPPI\u2019s Glazer Information Center, commented:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\u201cThe new Syrian government is shifting closer to the West, as reflected in Al-Shara\u2019s recent meeting with President Trump and the U.S. decision to lift sanctions on Syria. Al-Shara has hinted at openness to relations with Israel, and his steps to tone down media hostility toward Israel reinforce that message with real policy.
