\u00a0A new study based on a systematic analysis of approximately 15,000 opinion columns in Turkish media presents a picture of deep hostility toward Israel.<\/h3>\n

Against the backdrop of the debate surrounding Turkey\u2019s role in any future arrangement in the Gaza Strip, a new study by JPPI (the Jewish People Policy Institute), based on a systematic analysis of approximately 15,000 opinion columns in Turkish media identified with President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan, presents a picture of deep hostility toward Israel, the normalization of Hamas, and widespread antisemitic discourse, especially following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack.<\/p>\n

Using advanced artificial intelligence tools, JPPI analysts examined opinion columns published in Turkey\u2019s two major newspapers, Sabah and H\u00fcrriyet, both of which are now considered part of the core pro-government media establishmentin Ankara.<\/p>\n

Sabah, a large and popular daily newspaper in Turkey, is known for its support of the government and is often regarded as a \u201cmouthpiece\u201d for Erdo\u011fan\u2019s Justice and Development Party. In any case, it is considered one of the most influential newspapers in the country.<\/p>\n

H\u00fcrriyet (Turkish for \u201cFreedom\u201d) is the most widely circulated newspaper in Turkey. In 2018 it was sold to a conglomerate close to Erdo\u011fan and shifted its editorial line from liberal-secular to one that openly supports the government and President Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n

The study\u2019s findings raise serious questions about Turkey\u2019s role as a regional \u201cmediator\u201d and as a potential partner in international initiatives related to the \u201cday after\u201d in the Gaza Strip. Media aligned with the Ankara government normalize terrorism, undermine the legitimacy of the State of Israel, and recycle classic antisemitic stereotypes. Under President Erdo\u011fan, the anti-Israel rhetoric media outlets supporting him and his party has intensified, with an emphasis on support for Hamas and Palestinian narratives.<\/p>\n

Antisemitism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Approximately 40% of opinion columns mentioning Jews or Judaism were classified as containing antisemitic characteristics, according to the internationally accepted IHRA (the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance). Among other things, antisemitic motifs identified included: attributions of global power to \u201cJewish capital,\u201d comparisons between Zionism and Nazism, portrayals of Jews as a group enjoying immunity from criticism, denigrations of the Holocaust narrative, and conspiratorial insinuations. An example from H\u00fcrriyet: an article published about two weeks after October 7 claimed that global Jewish capital and Jewish control of the media and international institutions succeeded in bringing the United States and Europe \u201cto their knees\u201d in order to allow Israel to carry out genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Attitudes Toward October 7<\/strong><\/p>\n

The attitude toward the events of October 7 is mostly neutral in both newspapers; however,\u00a0H\u00fcrriyet<\/em>\u00a0is somewhat more critical. Even so, there is almost no unequivocal condemnation of the massacre, and in most columns,\u00a0there is no direct mention of the deliberate targeting of Israeli civilians.\u00a0Sabah<\/em>\u00a0published\u00a0more articles with a positive attitude than\u00a0H\u00fcrriyet<\/em>.<\/p>\n

For example, in\u00a0Sabah<\/em>, one day after the October 7 massacre (October 8, 2023), admiration was expressed for the \u201cresistance fighters\u201d of a people whose hands and feet are bound under siege, who,\u00a0while hungry and thirsty,\u00a0managed to carry out a \u201cmythic\u201d attack that would become a turning point in the struggle. Israel is referred to as the \u201cZionist occupying regime\u201d and a \u201cgenocidal regime,\u201d and the massacre is\u00a0referred to by Hamas\u2019s designation,\u00a0\u201cAl-Aqsa Flood.\u201d Article\u00a0here.<\/a><\/p>\n

In\u00a0H\u00fcrriyet<\/em>, an article presents a \u201cprincipled\u201d statement by President Erdo\u011fan, portrayed as a \u201cglobal leader,\u201d in which he condemns Hamas\u2019s harm to civilians (the article was written on October 12, 2023), but in the same breath warns that the limits of patience and restraint are about to be reached in light of the massacre Israel is committing in Gaza. Article\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In another\u00a0Sabah<\/em>\u00a0article, it is claimed that Israel\u2019s and the West\u2019s massacre in Gaza surpasses even the actions of Hitler. Article\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, it is claimed that Israel\u2019s advantage over Nazi Germany is that, unlike Hitler, Netanyahu can massacre Palestinians while presenting himself as a victim. Article\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

About the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

The study was conducted through the collection and computerized analysis of thousands of opinion columns, systematically\u00a0translated\u00a0from the original language, and advanced content analysis using artificial intelligence tools with human analytical oversight. It is one of the first comprehensive studies to examine \u2013 both quantitatively and qualitatively \u2013 Turkish media discourse regarding Israel, Jews, Hamas, and the events of October 7. The study was conducted by researchers at\u00a0JPPI\u2019s Diane and Guilford\u00a0Glazer Information\u00a0and Consulting\u00a0Center: Shlomi Bereznick, Eli Kannai, and Yaakov Katz.<\/p>\n

Prof. Yedidia Stern, President of JPPI:<\/strong> \u201cThe findings of this\u00a0study speak for themselves, and they are deeply troubling. At the same time, it is clear that the relationship with Turkey is broader and also based on economic interests in energy and trade. At the same time, some Turkish\u00a0media\u00a0outlets are\u00a0not\u00a0so closely aligned\u00a0with Erdo\u011fan\u2019s regime. Israeli decision-makers must look at reality soberly and as it is, and not ignore these facts. We must not normalize incitement and antisemitism anywhere in the world \u2013 certainly not when it comes from countries with which\u00a0Israel\u00a0maintains\u00a0diplomatic relations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
