Annual Assessment Questionnaire
Please complete the following survey to the best of your ability. We thank you for your cooperation.
The Staff of the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI)
To begin, we would like to know in general how, from the perspective of the Jewish people, you would evaluate the past year.
In general, would you say that during the past year the overall situation of the Jewish people has improved, declined, or stayed the same?

Declined
Stayed the same

In general, would you say that in the past year the situation of Diaspora Jewish communities has improved, declined, or stayed the same?

Stayed the same
Now we would like to get more detailed and relate to the five dimensions of Jewish well-being according to which JPPI formulates its annual integrated net assessment of the Jewish people.
In the
geopolitical arena
, the following three trends stand out:
The war in Ukraine intensifies the trend of a declining "world order" and impacts the international status of the United States and the future of Europe.
Continued efforts under the leadership of the United States to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran, whose framework is not supported by Israel.
Trends relating to the Israeli-Arab conflict: Regarding Arab countries – significant improvement in relations; regarding the Palestinians – outbreaks of terrorism and political stalemate.
Do you believe there are other significant trends that should be added to these? If so, please describe them in the following box:
Regarding the trends we have mentioned, and those that you have added (if so), would you say that the
geopolitical situation of the Jewish people
has improved, declined, or stayed the same?
Improved
Declined
Stayed the same
Based on your previous response, please indicate how you think the "geopolitical gauge" should be set this year. The options are, in descending order:
Thriving
Prospering
Maintaining
Troubled
Declining
In the
dimension of material resources
, the following three trends stand out:
Inflation and a global undermining of a sense of economic security (partly due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine) will affect the decisions taken by Israel, Jewish organizations, and donors in regard to the distribution of resources in the coming years.
Israel will be required to invest considerable resources (with the assistance of the Jewish people) in the absorption of immigrants from Ukraine and Russia.
Signs of continued erosion of Jewish participation in Jewish community institutions in the United States, and a trend of shrinking community institutions.
Do you believe there are other significant trends that should be added to these? If so, please describe them in the following box:
Regarding the trends we have mentioned, and those you have added (if so), would you say that the
material resources of the Jewish people
have improved, declined, or stayed the same?

Based on your previous response, please indicate how you think the "material resources gauge" should be set this year. The options are, in descending order:
Thriving
Prospering

Troubled
Declining
In the
dimension of community bonds
, the following three trends stand out:
Jewish people mobilization to assist the Jews of Ukraine, both in providing refuge and economic assistance. Relatively limited aid to Russian Jews has run into obstacles due to Western boycotts.
Following changes in response to the pandemic, the return to routine international travel and renewed gatherings of Jews have increased.
Controversial issues of religion and state that impact Israel-Diaspora relations, such as the Western Wall compromise agreement, conversion reform, etc., are not progressing toward a solution, among other things due to the lack of political planning in Israel.
Do you believe there are other significant trends that should be added to these? If so, please describe them in the following box:

community bonds of the Jewish people
have improved, declined, or stayed the same?

In the dimension of Jewish
identity and identification
, the following three trends stand out:
This year, there has been a further polarization in the discourse on Jewish/Israeli identity and an intensification of rhetoric, indicating tense relations between groups in Israel as a result of the formation of a new government, which relies on a small majority coalition.
The trend of transitioning Jewish activity (especially synagogues) to online programing continues, which may have a significant impact on patterns of communal belonging.
Growth of routine comparisons of Zionism to "structural racism" makes it difficult for young liberal Jews to support Israel as a Jewish nation-state, regardless of its policy (the Amnesty International report was a worrying development in this regard).
Do you believe there are other significant trends that should be added to these? If so, please describe them in the following box:
Regarding the trends we have mentioned, and those you have added (if so), would you say that the
identity and identification dimension of the Jewish people
has improved, declined or stayed the same?

In the dimension of
demography
the following three trends stand out:
The growth rate of the global Jewish population is declining.
Significant immigration to Israel (tens of thousands of immigrants) from Ukraine and Russia due to the war. The rate of immigration to Israel from most countries is slowly returning to its pre-Covid level.
A political confrontation over the absorption of Jewish and non-Jewish refugees from Ukraine, as well as the (unsuccessful) attempt to reform the conversion process in Israel, increased interest in, and sharpened the question of, Israel's demographic policies.
Do you believe there are other significant trends that should be added to these? If so, please describe them in the following box:
